Suddenly, travel in 2021 is about more than fending off jet lag and having the right power adapters for your devices. You\u2019ve got to be aware of COVID hotspots \u2014 and the restrictions various countries have adopted in response to the virus \u2014 as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t be deceived by polls that say two-thirds of Americans say life is at least <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/06\/04\/politics\/coronavirus-pandemic-poll\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">somewhat back to normal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as vaccines roll out and local businesses reopen. Whether or not such polls are accurate, the situation can be drastically different overseas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While nations like New Zealand, Iceland, and Vietnam have handled the pandemic <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.movehub.com\/blog\/best-and-worst-covid-responses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relatively well<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, places like Brazil, India, Mexico, and the U.K. have had their problems. It\u2019s important to know what the situation looks like where you\u2019re headed, especially if you\u2019ll be staying for an extended time to teach.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of health precautions you\u2019d want to take when traveling during \u201cnormal\u201d times, here are some things you should consider as (or before) you head out.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Consider COVID Policies<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Each country is handling <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/Topics\/imf-and-covid19\/Policy-Responses-to-COVID-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">its response to the virus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in its own way, which means different policies and restrictions will be in place for foreigners traveling abroad. Some countries are fully open to U.S. travelers, while others require testing as a condition of entering. Still, others continue to keep quarantines in place.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mexico closed its land border through at least June 1 but has still allowed Americans to fly there. You\u2019ll need to know <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/us-international-travel-covid-19\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what\u2019s required of you<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in your chosen destination before you depart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beyond the red tape of entering and leaving, it\u2019s also important to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/travelers\/map-and-travel-notices.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">know the area\u2019s risk level<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. As of June, the CDC designated more countries in the \u201cvery high\u201d group for COVID risk (Level 4) than in any other category. This included places like Ireland, Spain, South Africa, Germany, Egypt, and Chile. The CDC recommends that travelers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/travelers\/map-and-travel-notices.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">avoid all Level 4 destinations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If, on the other hand, you were planning a trip to Australia, New Zealand, Samoa, or Taiwan, your risk was considered low (Level 1) as of June 6. Nevertheless, the CDC recommends wearing a mask, staying at least 6 feet away from those not traveling with you, and washing your hands or using hand sanitizer often in these areas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, take gloves, disinfectant wipes, and hand sanitizer with you. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachingnomad.com\/blog\/teaching-abroad\/the-future-of-traveling-and-teaching-abroad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking precautions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can keep you safer, and this is doubly important if you\u2019re planning an extended stay\u00a0 to teach abroad.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Be Prepared for Other Illnesses\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just COVID you\u2019ll have to worry about. Overseas travelers have a 50% chance of suffering from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au\/health\/HealthyLiving\/travel-health-tips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">travel-related illnesses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The most common are gastrointestinal infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since many of these illnesses come from untreated or unsanitary water and food, it\u2019s a good idea to avoid buying from street vendors and to drink boiled or bottled water. Avoid fruit or veggies washed in local water, and take your drinks without ice. Probiotics can also help you avoid stomach complaints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/common-health-problems-associated-with-travel-in-developing-countries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">travel to developing countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carries a higher risk for contracting conditions like malaria, influenza, and acute respiratory infections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One way to minimize your risk of getting sick is prevention, so you can start from a healthy baseline: Get a check-up before you leave to make sure you\u2019re not coming down with something. An eye exam and dental exam can\u2019t hurt, either.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Pack an Emergency Kit<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you plan to travel by vehicle once you arrive at your destination, it\u2019s a good idea to buy or make your own <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.utires.com\/articles\/car-emergency-kit-list\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">car emergency kit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> containing first aid supplies, emergency food and water, and basic tools. Don\u2019t forget to pack your prescription medications, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An emergency kit is also helpful to have on hand in your apartment, where you may need basic tools or first aid. They are typically even small enough to store in a backpack, so you can keep them with you if you go hiking or decide to explore. This is especially important if you\u2019ll be venturing \u201coff the beaten path.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Do Your Research<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re a teacher, you know how important it is to do your research. Before you leave, you should contact your insurance company to determine how you\u2019ll be covered while abroad. Also, decide whether you need a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/travel.usnews.com\/features\/the-best-travel-insurance-companies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">travel insurance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> policy in case you get sick or something else unforeseen puts a crimp in your plans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Different countries will have different medical care facilities and policies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teachingnomad.com\/blog\/living-abroad\/medical-facilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In China, for example<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, most care is provided in hospitals, rather than through general practitioners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take your insurance card with you, and jot down the contact information for U.S. consulates where you\u2019ll be traveling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Prioritize Your Health<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prioritizing your health may sound simple, but it\u2019s not as easy as you might think. For example, it\u2019s important to get good sleep to stay healthy, but jet lag can make this difficult. You may sleep more lightly in an unfamiliar location, so pack earplugs and a sleep mask to block out distractions. And as always, avoid caffeine and alcohol, especially before bedtime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t let your travels disrupt your exercise routine, either, if you can help it. If you\u2019re used to having your bike with you or going to the gym, find alternatives like jogging, hiking, or swimming. Getting out in the fresh air and sunshine will help your mood as well as your physical health.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traveling abroad is meant to be an adventure, but it can turn into the wrong kind of adventure if you don\u2019t take steps to preserve your health and safety.
